"Golmaal Gharana" is a quirky and hilarious film about an eccentric joint family living in an ancestral haveli in Lucknow. The story revolves around their madcap schemes to save their home from being taken over by a greedy builder while dealing with their personal quirks and hilarious misunderstandings.

Businessman Rai Bahadur Ramdas lives a wealthy lifestyle in a mansion along with his wife, Shanta; two sons: Kailash and Kamal; Kailash's wife, Sita; and widowed Gauri, the wife of his late son and mother of two children, Gappu and Pappu. Kamal runs the business and ensures that everyone is happy - albeit in vain, as his mother physically and mentally abuses Gauri and Sita, while pampering her married daughter, Bhairavi, to no end, and even permitting her to leave her husband, Sarang, and live in their house. Sita gets pregnant, and Kamal, rather dramatically gets married to Usha Gupta, the daughter of wealthy Advocate Shyam Lal Gupta. Then things rapidly deteriorate after jewelry goes missing and Kailash is seen with another woman, and refuses to return home. Nothing will prepare the family for the shock and trauma when they find out the reason why Kailash has moved out.

Ganesh (Selva), a good-for-nothing youth, falls in love with Aishwarya (Monica Nerukkar). Her father Karnal Rajappa (Rajan P. Dev) is a very strict father who hates love. Ganesh and Aishwarya decide to elope but her father later has a heart attack and Aishwarya refuses to marry him. Karnal Rajappa's state of health deteriorates, therefore he arranges his daughter's wedding as soon as possible. Three terrorists (Sathya Prakash, Mahanadi Shankar and Bhanu Prakash) escape from jail. While preparing Aishwarya's wedding in Karnal Rajappa's house, Ganesh enters in her room and tries to convince her. In the meantime, the three terrorists enter in their house and begin to sequester them. These terrorists are ultimately Ganesh's friends and it was Ganesh's plan to marry his lover Aishwarya. What transpires later forms the crux of the story.
